Mount Baker High School junior Raney Lepper is stronger than metal and is our All-Whatcom County Girls’ Wrestler of the Year. She was photographed at Gundie’s Auto Recyclers Thursday, March 24, in Bellingham.
This photo was fun to figure out. I thought about crushing cars while coming up with ideas for this portrait and then I remembered seeing a car recycling place out Mount Baker Highway. I went out there to scout it out and see if they would allow me to do this portrait there. It was really creepy walking around this “car graveyard” by myself. I didn’t find any car that jumped out to me to be the prop in my photo but I knew I could find something that would work. I told one of the workers, who sees all the cars that come in there, my vision for the photo and he tried to come up with a few cars that could work for when I came back about a week later. I arrived a couple hours before I had Raney arrive on the day we decided to do this photo. The worker I had been talking to didn’t really have any ideas but walked around with me to figure something out. I came across a jeep that kind of had a bent up hood and I thought it would be cool if Raney could be ripping the metal hood apart. I asked if they could cut the hood a bit and bend it so this could happen. I didn’t know if this would work completely, so I scouted out another car that was nearby that had a crushed in roof. I photographed Raney in both locations and the second one came out to be the photo I liked better. When Raney was “ripping” the metal in the first setup, she was too nice looking and I couldn’t get her to look mean (which I guess is a good thing for her). In this photo she is all smiles too but I think it works for her personality. Hopefully the concept ‘stronger than metal’ comes out in this photo.
