Nooksack Valley High School senior Kyle Impero got air this season and is our All-Whatcom County Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year. He was photographed at the Nooksack Valley High School gym Thursday, March 31, in Everson.
I knew right away that I wanted to have Kyle be the air element photo. I had photographed him a couple times during the season and remembered him being pretty tall. I wanted to have him dunking the ball in the photo—getting air. At first I thought this would be the photo then I decided I needed an extra element to make the photo interesting and not just an action shot. I decided to rent a smoke machine, which after a long run-around I finally found. I originally wanted to show the smoke kind of wisping behind him as he was going up to the basket. Sometimes the way things actually turn out are way cooler than you expected in the first place. As I took a couple shots in the beginning of the shoot, I realized I needed more smoke so I had Kyle’s coach hold down the button for more smoke to come out until it filled my frame. It turned out to look like he was dunking in the clouds. Perfect. This portrait was extremely fun to make and I was so happy to end the series with a bang. Oh yeah, and the fire alarm only went off twice (despite me making sure they turned it off… Haha!)
