Lynden Christian High School junior Jasmine Hommes was on fire this year and is our All-Whatcom County Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year. She was photographed Tuesday evening, March 29, at Roosevelt Park in Bellingham with the help of Bellingham Circus Guild performers Jason Quick, Strangely and Chipp.
I knew the fire element photo was going to be tough. I wanted to somehow have Jasmine be encompassed by the fire. I remember seeing photos of fire dancers swinging fiery ropes around them and the photographer using a slow shutter speed to allow for the fire to be all around them. I kind of was going off that idea and then I needed to come up with a way to get this to happen and safely. I decided to reach out to some local fire jugglers and breathers from the Bellingham Circus Guild. Mother Nature did not cooperate with this photo and it made me panic a little bit. It was raining pretty steadily (a Pacific Northwest drizzle) so that didn’t help and then I was battling the light. I wanted it to be dark enough for the background to be black but as it got darker it was harder for the jugglers to perform and I didn’t want them to get hurt. I had a narrow window to get my photo, and that window came to be narrower than I originally thought. Ultimately, I would have liked the outcome of this shot to have more fire in it, but it’s unique and different.
